Sheila Y. Oliver was an American politician who served as the second lieutenant governor of New Jersey from 2018 until her death in 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, Oliver was the first Black woman to serve in the position, as well as the first woman of color elected to statewide office in New Jersey.
Oliver was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1952. She graduated from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania with a degree in political science, and then earned a master’s degree in public administration from Columbia University.
After college, Sheila worked as a social worker and community organizer. She also served on the East Orange Board of Education, eventually becoming the board’s president.
In 2004, Oliver was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly, representing the 34th legislative district. She served in the Assembly for 14 years, and was the speaker of the body from 2010 to 2014. In 2013, Oliver ran for U.S. Senate, but lost the Democratic primary to Cory Booker.
In 2017, Oliver was chosen as the running mate of Democrat Phil Murphy for governor of New Jersey. The ticket won the election, and Oliver was sworn in as lieutenant governor on January 16, 2018. Murphy and Oliver were reelected in 2021.
Oliver died on August 1, 2023, at the age of 71.
